A real apology now. I’m sorry, I really am… about the complete lack of ‘Meta Comment’ in the last few months. This ‘blog’ has foundered on the shores of aesthetics, parody and nothing else… I understand the ‘content’ has suffered.
This site should be a personal account of things going on around me, an archive of funny little nuggets of daily life and the odd and occasionally splendid people I encounter. If this page had any mantra it would be something along the lines of ‘you should have been there’.
From an early-days defender of Web 2.0 I do believe everyone should be free to publish as much self-obsessed rubbish as they like; I also love criticism and I do wish (in line with Web 2.0’s ‘community’ spirit) there was a little more debate in the comments here.
What more is there to say: must try better. I’m not going to pander- just sayin’! Maybe I keep my best side in the notebook. Perhaps the keyboard created this deft shrine to frivolous comment.
I’ve made Starred Review (a plugin now unsupported by its author) play with Wordpress 2.2+ [Download Starred Review 1a]. It still needs a little tinkering, but I really love this little plugin, this weekend I should get round to clearing up. If you’re interested drop me a line. There was a little interest last year when I released a ‘patched’ version, and although there are other plugins out there that do the same thing- but since I’ve got my database setup for Marc’s “Starred Review” it seems to make sense to carry it forward. Any requests?
Short Term Goals:
- Support for Wordpress 2.1+
- Images (Album Artwork)
- RSS
- Built in Amazon / iTS [automation of linking]
Long Term:
- Multiple Pages / Search
- Widget for OS X [add reviews from Dashboard / iPhone]
- A word or two [space for a mini 'review' rather than just stars]
- CSS control from the options panel
For now, I’m sorry I lost the original patched version- the file doesn’t exist on my hard disk, and I don’t have .Mac anymore… that was where the file was hosted. I do have the Archive.org version of the original how-to / files.
Update: You can now Download Starred Review. It sort of works too.

I’ve unlocked my iPhone. It works great on Orange and O2 in the UK. Below are the only links you’ll need to do it, if you’d like to give this a shot. Very simple, around 2 hours to complete. Do not upgrade to firmware 1.1.1 once you’ve completed the process.
Update: You can use a new guide (see my post) to unlock any 1.1.1 iPhone, furthermore you can downgrade an O2 / UK 1.1.2 iPhone to 1.1.1… see this page.
1. The Unlocking Guide from ModMyiPhone.com.
tips: you’ll need to register to download the apps, if iNdependance doesn’t work at first- try again and hit ‘unlock’ as soon as the app launches, the Install.app that you install to the iPhone contains a registry of downloads [you'll find Community Sources DNS Tools, BSD Subsystem and OpenSSH under the "Install" tab, take your damn time.]
2. Reconfigure iPhone Voicemail
tip: O2 is 901- press the * to access the options. doesn’t support visual voicemail yet
3. Working WAP / EDGE codes can be found on Google for your carrier… for O2 the codes are:
APN: mobile.o2.co.uk
Username: mobileweb
Password: password
I’ve been reading Engadget for a good few years now, they (in particular the opinions and interests of writer phil torrone) have opened my eyes to flickr to web 2.0, they introduced me to podcasting, to RSS – I learned everything I know about PSP cracking from their blog.
They have a great staff, a cutting-edge knowledge base that no main-stream zine, blog or rolling news service can get close to. They know people, and they make em talk.
Earlier last week the creators of iPhoneSIMFree got in touch with the Engadget crowd, gave them a demo of the first application to unlock the iPhone from software. Although the app didn’t complete the process (due to the servers iPhoneSIMFree will contact to verify licenses or something being out of operation– or … something) Engadget have put a lot of faith in these guys, have even said that this is 100% legit- will work, will unlock the iPhone.
I’m just saying- this is a big gamble, no? I really hope tomorrow (when the app is ‘launched’) it’ll all work out, and when I get my mitts on the iPhone (Friday, hopefully) I’ll be unlocking it to work no-problem in the UK. Something that at the moment is nearly impossible. I love this being at the forefront of technology, not much of it really matters- i mean this isn’t real life but its a great community activity in a weird way. i’m stoked, watch it happen here.
Update: So, the day is here- and the verdict is: Yes, the iPhone has been unlocked- with a bloated price tag to go with it (end-user sales of up to $100 per license!) iPhoneSIMFree is the simple app you need to unlock your iPhone for worldwide use. See: Engadget, Gizmondo, TUAW. I’ll give my report from Edinburgh next weekend (when the phone arrives) :D
can’t say why… but i love this site: http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/. Archived photos from American naval deployments etc. i’ve come back to it many times since I discovered it 5 years or so ago, I suppose I like ships, engineering, black and white photography and archives. but i keep loosing it, so I’ll post it here… best way to navigate this site is via the ’site:#’ google images: here.
some great shots of old New York (1930’s) in there, a particular one of Brooklyn Bridge which uncannily mirrors BlueJake’s latest post. I’ll go find it now.
