Grace

I remember when I first became interested in who
U2 are and were, I downloaded a screensaver. It was one of those school days I
spent dreaming - rather than doing anything work-specific, It was warm and
bright, a late Summer sort of lazy sultry summer’s eve. I had dial up connection
(56kbs - faster than the speed of
thought
), no musical taste, no direction, an
ex-girlfriend, a military fixation, a pentium 2. It was 2001, screensavers were
pretty cool… So I download this promo screensaver for U2’s new album
All That You Can’t Leave
Behind
” - it was an animated album-work dilly
with swirling suitcases and aircraft and bees… it made little sense but felt
all right. The screensaver had 15 second clips of each track thrown in for fun,
they would fade in and out in
Grace…She
takes the blameShe covers the
shameRemoves the
stainIt could be her name,
Grace.It’s a name for a
girlIt’s also a thought that changed the
worldAnd when she walks on the
streetYou can hear the
stringsGrace finds goodness in
everythingGrace, she’s got the
walkNot on a ramp or on
chalkShe’s got the time to
talkShe travels outside of
karmaShe travels outside of
karmaWhen she goes to
workYou can hear her
stringsGrace finds beauty in
everythingGrace, she carries a world
on her hipsNo champagne flute for her
lipsNo twirls or skips between her
fingertipsShe carries a pearl in perfect
conditionWhat once was
hurtWhat once was
frictionWhat left a
markNo longer
stingsBecause grace makes
beautyOut of ugly
thingsGrace makes beauty out of ugly
things
