I remember when I first became interested in who
U2 are and were, I downloaded a screensaver. It was one of those school days I
spent dreaming - rather than doing anything work-specific, It was warm and
bright, a late Summer sort of lazy sultry summer’s eve. I had dial up connection
(56kbs - faster than the speed of
thought), no musical taste, no direction, an
ex-girlfriend, a military fixation, a pentium 2. It was 2001, screensavers were
pretty cool… So I download this promo screensaver for U2’s new album
“All That You Can’t Leave
Behind” - it was an animated album-work dilly
with swirling suitcases and aircraft and bees… it made little sense but felt
all right. The screensaver had 15 second clips of each track thrown in for fun,
they would fade in and out in

So I watched all the BBC coverage from
Glastonbury this weekend, on BBC 3 and through the special red button features.
Nice to see the BBC have everything in order, next year they’ll be podcasting -
but the extra features were pretty sweet for anyone interested in catching the
festival spirit. Anyway; spirit - good, music - what bollocks. I don’t keep up
with the whole thing thats going on right now and blanket statements like “pop
is shit” are my forte. But really, utter retro revival clich?? safe shit.
I’m waiting for something - some musical revelation - it has to come. Have you
ever heard Elvis or Sergeant Pepper’s… although incredibly popular and yes,
pastiche the Beatles and Elvis took a sound (a local or growing sound) gave it a
shake rattle and roll and wham, I mean God some amazing noises.
Really.Anyway - pop is shit. What the
fuck do these people think they’re doing - you idiot producers who want to find
the next
x -
the next easy breakfast cereal packaging mother-safe excuse for someone else’s
music. I won’t appologise - I get incredibly pissed off when subjected to other
peop… sorry no- people have nothing to do with music or taste it is completely
manufactured your fools to the marketing bandwagon that is force-fed popular
culture.Go listen to Miles Davis and
if the beat isn’t fast enough slow down or you will die. Now, I started with
bashing Glasonbury - I also watched (on the very fine BBC 4) some african jazzy
/ jamming. It was simply wonderful and of that second, I did write down the
names of the artists, but what’s the point - it was good, I experienced it
(sadly from my sofa), its over. Stop rutting you post-new-romanic yuppy fucks,
Paul is
dead.
I rushed home from work today to catch Canadian
singer-songwriter-hottie Feist on KCRW, she was playing a set of music from
her album Let
it Die. An album I’ve had my hands on for a few months, since seeing
the video for One
Evening on late night french TV… and in your
face jo! she
is
the ultimate in talented indie west-coast easy listening stylee music - not
‘pop’, pah I remove you from my list of trusted music sources… for a week or
so.KCRW really do rock, they don’t
just archive all playlists (even for songs played in between news segments) they
also archive Real Media audio and VIDEO for most live sessions, going back to
1997! I grabbed some Ben Folds (live with a string quintet in studio) and some
jive-tacular Beck. If your on a Mac Audio-Hijacker does
the grabbing, on PC CDEx… don’t ask me why but
you can’t save Real Media steams, legally.
And here’s a link to my favorite morning / late evening wake up program: Morning Becomes Eclectic - it
‘airs’ 5pm GMT, that’s 10 in the morning for my west-coast buddie(s).
You can also steam it through iTunes.
